Can anyone tell me what the Massey hydro trans is like in comparision to the big three?

Andy: It sounds like you might be closing in on a Massey. I imagine your question is about HST reliability and maintenance costs. I afraid I can't be of any specific help, but there are contributors here who probably are aware of Massey maintenance experience.
In general, I wouldn't be surprised to find that HST pumps and motors are manufacturered by third parties rather than the tractor manufacturers themselves. If manufacturers use general OEM type components, then there's a good chance the HST's on different tractors are basically the same. Of course, this is purely speculative and maybe somebody actually knows.
Again in general, you may be aware that HST's consist of axial-flow piston pumps and motors of similar design. These pumps generate variable displacements by swash or wobble plates, which can change the displacement by varying their angles in relation to the pump axis. I think most HST's use a swash rather than wobble plate design. I don't know if there are cost/maintenance differences between the two types of design.
I believe that most HST's use a swash plate type pump where the HST speed pedal controls the plate angle and the motor is a fixed displacement type. In such designs, ranges are created by conventional non-synchromesh gear sections. I believe there are 'gearless' designs where ranges are achieved by a variable displacement motor. Again, I don’t know if there are maintenance issues here. Maybe somebody knows specifics and then I'll learn something as well. Hope this is at least interesting even if not particularly helpful.

well I do know that the hydrostatic filter in the gc2310 and gc2300 hangs a bit low for my likeing and for the tune of $1100.00 when you hit the filter and break it off in rougher terrain. other than that I have 4.2 hours on my little guy and love this thing untill it broke or I broke it. this is by far a better tractor than the other three by far.... ....

Drive all models that you like. Put them up against a hill or a load of some type and see how they perform. The one that is the most reponsive is more then likely the most well balanced unit. ....

Andyfr: Massey Ferguson used to be the worlds largest tractor manufacturer, and may still be. I can't say anything bad about their products simply because I've personally never seen a Massey compact. There used to be two or three quite large Massey dealerships in my aeria, but it seemes that after the hard times in agriculture of the early 80's that they went out of business and never came back. I'm totally guessing on this, but I'd say that because of the close proximity of top notch dealerships that Deere and Kubota would be a tie and Ford-NH a close third so far as popularity here. Massey simply has ben in business too long to be building poor equipment, if they were they would have been out of the picture years ago. So it goes back to my old song and dance of having a good relationship with a top notch dealership,. If that's your situation and you like the Massey then by all means buy it, Orange, Green and Blue need a bit of competition to keep them on their toes.. Enjoy whatever you buy. Frank. ....
